Thanks to his ties to Ron Rivera and knowledge of Scott Turner's system, Kyle Allen seemed like a logical quarterback for the Redskins to pursue when he hit free agency next week. The only issue is that the Panthers didn't let Allen actually hit free agency. On Tuesday, Carolina inked the passer to a one-year contract, removing someone Washington could've been interested in as they aim to bring in competition for Dwayne Haskins. That's something Rivera has identified as a goal on many occasions this offseason.Fortunately for Rivera, he'll have plenty of other names to sort through.Someone else that Turner is familiar with is Teddy Bridgewater, who's almost certainly going to leave New Orleans now that Drew Brees is coming back for 2020. Those two were together in Minnesota for a few seasons in the mid-2010s, when Turner was QBs coach and Bridgewater was under center. Then there are the two top picks from the 2015 NFL Draft: Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Interceptions will ultimately force Winston out of Tampa, while ineffectiveness led to Mariota falling out of favor in Tennessee.Bridgewater, Winston and Mariota would all act as threats to the starting job that Haskins currently owns, which would likely please Rivera. However, they may ultimately be too expensive for the organization, or opt to go to another team where the path to taking the first snap in Week 1 is smoother.Ryan Tannehill, meanwhile, will either return to the Titans thanks to a new deal or a tag, or he'll attempt to build on his breakout 2019 in a different uniform. Yet that breakout effort should ultimately price him way out of what the Redskins will be willing to pay if he even makes it to the market.Beyond those four, there's a decent drop-off in upside with the remaining options.Philip Rivers will head elsewhere soon, but at 38 years old, he's probably looking at a destination like Indianapolis where he can have a more realistic chance at the postseason. Plus, the Burgundy and Gold would be better off developing the promising Haskins rather than turning to the declining Rivers. After Rivers, there are veterans like Case Keenum, Chase Daniel, Mike Glennon and Matt Moore, who all hope to find another home in their winding NFL journeys.

Keenum, of course, was a Redskin last season so he sticks out a bit, but those four and others like them fit more as backups. Now, one last player worth mentioning who isn't scheduled to be a free agent is Cam Newton. While reports indicate that the Panthers intend to move forward, there's a new coach in charge there who has no true allegiance to the former MVP, so perhaps he'll become available at some point. Rivera knows him well, so keep that in mind.Overall, it's clear Rivera hopes to create a battle for Haskins as the 22-year-old enters his second go-round in the league, and while it's possible he could accomplish that through the draft, the more probable route will be through free agency. The questions he'll face, though, will be about how much he's willing to spend and if he can convince a relatively established pro like a Bridgewater or Mariota to come to D.C with Haskins already in town. Those guys may not be considering the Redskins at the moment. That said, with all the QB movement that could transpire in the near future — remember, Tom Brady and Dak Prescott are in uncertain places as well — the Redskins might eventually end up being one solid signal caller's best spot.MORE REDSKINS NEWS. Trent trade. In January 2018, cornerback Kendall Fuller was dealt from the Redskins to the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the trade that Washington received Alex Smith in. Two years later, Fuller is coming back to the nation's capital. After two seasons with the Chiefs and a Super Bowl ring under his belt, the cornerback has agreed to a contract to return to the Redskins, The deal is four years and worth roughly $40 million,Fuller, a third-round pick of Washington in 2016, was a fan favorite during his two-season with Washington. He found his role in the slot, where he blossomed. Fuller notched four interceptions with the Redskins in 2017, a team-high.After being traded to Kansas City, Fuller played both on the outside and in the slot in 2018.
This past season, Fuller played almost exclusively in the slot, due to the emergence of Charvarius Ward and Bashaud Breeland on the outside.Despite playing just about half of Kansas City's defensive snaps in 2019, Fuller still found a way to make an impact. The cornerback showed up when it counted most, i late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV in order to seal the victory for the Chiefs.Heading back to Washington, Fuller should slide right into the slot cornerback position with Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau on the outside. But Fuller's versatility at the position - the ability to play both on the outside and in the slot - is perhaps what Washington will benefit from the most, as the team desperately needed to upgrade at cornerback in free agency. With big-time cornerbacks Byron Jones and James Bradberry signing elsewhere, the Redskins were able to get a quality cornerback in Fuller, something fans should be happy about.to download the MyTeams App by NBC Sports.

On a day that saw DeAndre Hopkins and, the Cowboys decided to sneak in one more giant piece of wide receiver news just as everyone was finally preparing to turn their phones and TVs off.Dallas and Amari Cooper agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract late Monday night,. The 25-year-old playmaker will stick with the franchise that traded a first-round pick for him halfway through the 2018 campaign. That news no doubt stings for Redskins fans. But this nugget from Adam Schefter will make it sting:Here’s a twist: the Washington Redskins pursued Amari Cooper today and tried to pry him away.
Dallas prevailed. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter)Cooper would've been a major upgrade (and, obviously, an expensive one as well) for the Redskins' offense, giving Terry McLaurin a dynamic threat to pair with and Dwayne Haskins another star target to throw to. Unfortunately, Cooper seemed intent on staying with the Cowboys, an intent he followed through on once they delivered the money. Now feels like a decent time to mention that he's gone for 16 catches, 316 yards and three touchdowns in three appearances versus the Burgundy and Gold since the trade, including a ridiculous eight-grab, 180-yard, two-score performance on Thanksgiving in 2018.At this point, guys like Robby Anderson and Emmanuel Sanders are the most viable, established receivers still available.
The 2020 Draft also looks like it's loaded with potential and can be another place for Ron Rivera to find more juice for his new team's offense.Snagging Cooper from the Cowboys would've made the Redskins a lot better and the Cowboys a lot worse, but unfortunately, Washington lost to Dallas there. Also unfortunately, that's how this rivarly has been trending for a while now.MORE REDSKINS NEWS. Redskins' first signing:. Bradberry to NFC East:. Keenum departs.
